Curtains Down is a documentary feature film about the changes of the Italian theatre over the past few years affected by the economic crisis.

A performance of Alfieri's tragedy Saul, dedicated to secondary schools was followed by an animated  discussion among company members around the role of theater in our globalized and highly technologized society.

Is the theatre audience really disaffected? How much are theatrical activities connected to national territories?

After an initial attempt to tell the apparent Italian theatre crisis and by a deeper analysis of different Italian realities, Curtains Down became a documentary on theaters which are in fact having success – it tells stories about both small provincial theaters and  more important ones in bigger cities.

Which new languages, forms and aspects has our theatre developed to talk to its apparently distant audience?

Which is the future of the most ancient entertainment of our civilization facing nowadays increasing limited economic resources?

Do we feel there will be really a need for theatre in future?

Giù il sipario è un documentario sui cambiamenti atti dal teatro in Italia negli ultimi anni di crisi economica. Durante la stagione scorsa del Saul di Alfieri, messa in scena dalla Compagnia del Teatro del Loto e diretta da Stefano Sabelli, alla fine di una replica per licei, ha avuto inizio un dibattito sul ruolo che il teatro ha assunto all’interno della società globalizzata e altamente tecnologizzata. Il pubblico si è veramente disaffezionato alla performance dal vivo? Quanto sono realmente radicate le attività teatrali sul territorio nazionale? Dopo un iniziale tentativo di raccontare la crisi del teatro italiano, a fronte di un attento sguardo che va dalle realtà provinciali ai teatri stabili delle grandi città, Giù il sipario si è trasformato nella documentazione del teatro italiano che ce la sta facendo. Quali nuovi linguaggi, quali nuove forme e aspetti ha sviluppato il nostro teatro per parlare a un pubblico solo in apparenza sempre più distante?

Quale futuro ha in serbo l’arte più antica della nostra civiltà a fronte delle sempre maggiori ristrettezze economiche? In breve: continuerà ad esserci sempre bisogno di teatro?
